More About Me:

I am Director of the Software Management professional MS program at Carnegie Mellon West and Executive Director of the Center for Open Source Investigation (COSI).

I've worked with open source software for many years. As a Professor at University of California, San Francisco, my research team released our User Software Engineering development tools under the BSD open source license in 1981. That software was part of the foundation for the products developed by Interactive Development Environments (IDE). I founded the company and served as its President and CEO for 10 years. IDE's flagship product was the innovative multi-user Software through Pictures (StP) modeling environment, which was among the first commercial software products to incorporate open source components. Subsequently, I joined Bluestone Software, leading a development lab that built an open source toolkit which enabled a broad variety of mobile devices to interact with J2EE-based web applications.

I'm also a founding member of the recently formed Working Group on Open Source Software of the International Federation of Information Processing, as well as Chair of the Business Readiness Rating project (openbrr.org)
